Cara Mengatasi Error File Asms is needed Saat Instalasi Windows

Pernahkah anda mengalami Error “Asms” pada saat menginstal Windows….???
Ada beberpa Penyebab kegagalan yang dapat terjadi dalam melakukan instalasi OS. Jika pernah dan anda sedang mengalami kesulitan dalam mengatasinya anda bisa langsung mencoba cara dibawah ini.

1. Bila Anda menerima pesan error, tekan SHIFT + F10 untuk dapat masuk ke Command Promt.
2. ketikkan regedit.exe , dan tekan ENTER
3. Pilih HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE .
4. Pada menu File, klik Load HIVE, dan kemudian upload “% Windir%\system32\Config\System.sav”.
5. Tulis TEST jika anda diminta untuk memasukkannya.
6. Cari dan kemudian klik tombol berikut:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Test\ControlSet1\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
7. Hapus UPPERFILTERS dan LOWERFILTERS pada registri.
8. Jika path dalam pesan kesalahan yang benar adalah huruf drive untuk CD-ROM, klik OK untuk melanjutkan program Setup.
9. Jika kesalahan diatas masih terjadi, maka cobalah ikuti langkah 1 dan 2
10. Ketikkan CHKDSK, dan ENTER
11. Jika terdapat badsector, maka langkah pertama yang harus dilakukan adalah memotong partisi badsector tersebut.
12. Selanjutnya instalasi dapat dilanjutkan kembali seperti biasanya.

From: Ah Kuan from Malaysia on 11/16/2011 if you guys facing this problem, and keyboard mouse cannot move.... try copy C:\windows\system32\driver from another win xp computer and paste it in the same directory in the problem pc. From: Doc Holiday on 10/18/2011 I also came across the missing asms folder recently. I am installing XP SP3 with a usb dvd drive on a tablet attached to a keyboard dock. I tried lots of the fixes mentioned on this site including the registry fix, ejecting the disc then clicking ok, autochk.exe, switching around the boot order in BIOS, and a few others. None worked.What did work was I took the tablet out of its dock. Simple as that. Based on that I would suggest having as few external devices connected as possible. Votes: Rating: 0 Delete: 0

Thanks Steve! ----------------------------------------------------- Steve on 09/18/2009 I too had been getting the dreaded 'asms' problem during Windows XP SP2 install, and Terrys fix regarding Device Manager got me half way there: 1) when prompted for the 'Asms' file hit shift+F10 to get to dos prompt 2)at prompt type "sysdm.cpl" which will take you to the system screen. 3) Click hardware tab then devices to take you to the device list 4) locate your CD drive and it may have a yellow error symbol over it 5)right click the CD drive and click properties 6)click the driver tab and click update driver 7)choose 'install driver from specific location' 8)click 'dont search I will choose' 9)choose the very first generic CD driver on the list and click "next". After rebooting this seemed to solve my problem, my CD drive came back to life and it all worked - I had previously tried every fix known such as the official regedit, the re burning of the disc to a DVD but to no avail. Nearly wanted to explode from the frustration..and then..I turned off the laptop and left it there for about 5 minutes. Turned it on and tried the installation again and it worked?!?!?! Boot order: It seems XP expects to have first the master HDD (C:) where you are installing, and second the CD/DVD ROM unit (D:) with the Windows XP install disk. Thanks to all for your suggestions. But one of our friends below said that he used the external drive instead of internal drive to run the xp cd, so i use extenal drive and it only function half way when it pop up a lot of new message so i need to key in 'E:\I386' every time and for sure i need to key in manually.. this is the last result.. and i can see that my dell pc is continuing to setup and installing windows and the time of set up also decrease from 39 mminutes to 37 minutes.. thanks God. Short of screaming and smashing this lump of plastic i gave up and slammed the Cd rom drive shut for the final time. God dam it, it worked. From: Neil on 05/07/2011 This was enormously confounding, BUT...the right BIOS boot order for my ancient Gateway turned out to be FLOPPY, CD-ROM, HARD DRIVE. Tried all the recommendations on this page and nothing worked. From: Frustrator on 04/05/2011 This is what i did, and it worked for me:1. Hit shift + F10 2. Type in autochk.exe then hit enter. 1. Take out the cd, spit on it, cursed it, and then wipe it clean. 2. Insert it back into the cd/dvd player. 3. Restart computer, and keep on hitting F8 as soon as black screen appears. DVD RW drive of D610 was in perfect working condition nonetheless, I switched it with the modular drive from my other laptop which is the next higher model Dell D630 and voila ! the install continued but only to show an error dialog that the Connexant modem is not a compatible hardware, do you want to continue installing Yes/No? From: Rich on 02/18/2011 A keyboard problem prompted me to try an XP "repair" procedure. Had the same problem/error message you folks did, so I won't recap the details again. My system has two DVD burners connected to the MOBO- one is EIDE and the other SATA. Unplugged the SATA and left the EIDE plugged in with the installation disk in it. Also in a fit of childish impatience I changed boot order to HDD first. On restarting the PC "repair" seems to be proceeding again. Votes: Rating: 0 Delete: 0

From: Rick on 02/13/2011 Had the same problem with D:\I386\asms failure, trying to fix a notebook with no CD drive. Had to use a remote drive. What worked was removing the hard drive from the notebook, and installing the I386 file in the hard drive, using an external enclosure. Put drive back in, removed the USB-CD drive so the program kept asking me for the "D:\I386\asms" path. As long as the CD drive wasn't in, you can type C:\I386 and it will find the file. From: Tuan on 12/20/2010 I have an Acer netbook with an External USB CD-ROM drive. While starting the clean install of XP Pro it would give the error message. "The file 'asms' on Windows XP Professional SP2 is needed". it seemed like it wasnt even trying to read my CD-ROM drive at all..I fixed this problem by going into the bios and changing the SATA from AHCI to IDE. then doing a clean install of xp professional and everything went through just fine. From: Bill on 12/13/2010 I was having the same problem because the install wizard wasn't recognizing any drive letters other than c:So I removed the drive, popped it into a drive dock, copied the entire I386 folder to the root of the drive, and then put the drive back into the computer. Then whenever I was prompted for a file, I'd enter "c:\i386". Worked like a charm but of course I had to enter this value repeatedly because the wizard was too stupid to remember it.Amazing this problem is still occurring after all these years ... From: Steve on 10/12/2010 I have a very similar but slightly different twist to the ASMS problem.The error log says: installation failed d:\i386\asms. error message: the system cannot find the path specified I'm doing a repair install on an old Dell GX110. I have original Dell XPSp2 and XPSP3 CDs. No burned junk. There are too many old programs that the customer does not have the install packages for so a clean install is out. If I have the CD in, it just errors out. Without the CD, I get prompted for D:\I386. I can remove harddrive and connect to a good system with USB adapter to do copies to it, run Windows chkdsk, and antivirus scans with AVG and Malwarebytes (clean). I have tried everything in this string. Recovery console chkdsk /r, run Dell diags, repair install using SP2 CD first, then SP3 CD, cleaning CD, alternate CD drives, copy I386 and whole CD to harddrive (point to C:\I386 or C:\xpsp3cd\I386 when prompted), no files at 0Kb or glitches when copying, swap IDE cables, change cable select jumpers to master, put both HD and CD on same cable (yes, master and slave), run regedit from shift-f10 but no upper/lowerfilters to be found, found some missing system32 files (syssetup.dll, sfcfiles.dll, storprop.dll, imm32.dll, batt.dll) and got copies, shift-F10 sysdm.cpl volume tab and Populate drive letter, shift-f10 DOS prompt allows me to do dir of D:\*** and C:\*** even when error message is on screen. No matter what I do, the error is ALWAYS identical except for the path I pointed it to. I don't have gdiplus error, nor parameter incorrect error. I just can't get it to see the right PATH! I am exasperated. No other Googling has gotten me any closer. Are there possible Registry entries that I need to check? From: Tiger on 10/12/2010 I had this problem and tried everything. I was using an external cd rom as the internal wasn't working. It turned out that once I changed the USB cable everything worked fine. The USB cable had malfunctioned. I hope this helps. Votes: Rating: 0 Delete: 0

After trying all the above method for 4 hours, putting in the same cd and smashing my cd-rom in worked for me. I don't know how it worked because I had tried the same thing about a 50 times b4 but it din't wrk. Now magically when I almost gave up..my cd worked...all I have to say to people experiencing the same prob is that keep trying or get another cs rom and attach it to your comuter and try... From: Ben on 09/13/2010 I just had the same error "the file 'asms' on windows xp is missing" whilst I was trying to install a fresh copy of XP on my desktop.I had tried rebooting about 5 times. I also tried using another XP CD-ROM, just in case the first one was damaged, but to no avail.The problem seemed to be because I had a usb stick plugged in by mistake. Error message: incorrect func  paddydolly replied 2 years, 11 months ago this is because something went wrong while you are burning the XP cd. if you try to copy the ASMS file to other places from the CD, you will get an error, since the ASMS is not complete in the CD. when you burn the CD, you have to choose DAO(disk-at-once),not TAO(track-at-once), try to keep the speed under 10X, and most importantly, you cant mount the ISO file and then burn from the ... From: Frank on 08/31/2010 OK I tried every thing above well till about 3/4's of the way down had all kinds of strangeness on the system (i,e cdrom not regrecognized in the bios etc), nothing seemed to work, infact was about to throw the pc out of the window... until I said to hell with it and started doing random stuff in the bios, still nothing until I changed the following in the bios...BIOS Change: DRIVE CONFIG IDE DRIVE UDMA....... OFF (was on before) Worked a treat and now i have 16 minutes left and all looking A ok... Please try the other stuff out first but if all fails try this before throwing the pc out of the window! From: Derek on 07/21/2010 Hi all, listen to me:Please try inserting your USB devices (ALL OF THEM) *before* attempting to change the Boot order in BIOS. BIOS may not recognize devices if they are not plugged-in. and then, yes, getting the right boot order of devices should do the trick-- don't get frustrated or upset, calmly think it through with trail and error, it's just a matter of getting the computer to recognize/read from the device -- Votes: Rating: 0 Delete: 0

I have been trying to reboot but the screen is stuck on this blue page with Collect, dynamic, preparing... A repair box popped up that says files needed. I even stuck the original disc that come for repairing drivers. But since it will not recognize the drive it cannot boot from disc. What am I doing wrong. It took some doing, but I got Malewarebytes to function, did a scan, found trojans, adware, viruses. The twin USB cable yhingie is to give it the extra "juice" for burning labels, and if that ain't enough it has an AC Adapter transformer, which was plugged in.All the signal, and all the juice put to it seemed to "Wake Up" the XP Installation. Making the install FIND the CD at this point in the installation seems to be the trick. Your milage may vary, but pounding on the CD player just might work, too! Good luck. Swapping USB ports (only two of them) seemed most promising - I had been doing it off and on for a while, and always noticed a real 'pause' in things, like it almost found the CD. WHAT WORKED - after banging the USB-DVD/CD burner around, I thought of how much it cost. THEN, I remembered it came with a LOT of cables and goodies. One of the cables pluged into the drive, and at the end were TWO USB connectors. I plugged it in, ran it to both USB ports, and the sucker took off. No mouse right now, but ain't no problem. Then you will get several missing files messages and simply change as per above to let it find the files at C:\I386. I put the HDD first, Diskette second, and third CDrom to see if it will start upon reboot and I still receive the same error message. Linux is so much friendlier than this, I am really surprised after 5 years away from Windows at just how bad this is. Linux is supposed to be unfriendly, but not compared to Windows according to this thread. Don't ask me how this works...but it did for me. With the Dell operating system 'restore disc' in drive D:, and my bios setting set to boot to: IDE CD ROM first....I hit the ctrl, alt, del key just before the "ASMS" error message would appear, and to my utter amazement the operating system finished loading.I hope this works!! From: bbzing on 01/11/2010 right lads read half way down this page and basicly yeah this is hell and a half to get through. what worked fo rme was swpa the dvd or cd drive and no more problems. theoreticly u could use methods such a scopy the files to a sb drive or another hard disk drive or other method of data storage. this is ur best bet imo becuase i tryed the other methods like accessing the device manager and the xcop function biut as the driv esould not be detected in the first place that also failed. perhapps a bios update would fix the problem for peopes drive that dont work but i dont got the corage to try a bios update yet as i dont like the risk of needing toreplace my motherboard as i dont have dual bios... i dont know who was the first person to sugest sucha simple thing as u simply swap ur drive but to taht man much respect is due something so simple and yet easyly overlooked .. gd man taht man! and to any microsoft representative that may ever read this.. u fail ecpily! From: Steve on 09/18/2009 I too had been getting the dreaded 'asms' problem during Windows XP SP2 install, and Terrys fix regarding Device Manager got me half way there:1) when prompted for the 'Asms' file hit shift+F10 to get to dos prompt 2)at prompt type "sysdm.cpl" which will take you to the system screen. 3) Click hardware tab then devices to take you to the device list 4) locate your CD drive and it may have a yellow error symbol over it 5)right click the CD drive and click properties 6)click the driver tab and click update driver 7)choose 'install driver from specific location' 8)click 'dont search I will choose' 9)choose the very first generic CD driver on the list and click "next". From: Deji on 08/07/2009 I had a similar problem. All I did was to reboot and press F2 (Dell PC - Function key option varies per vendor) to boot to BIOS setting. My solution was to boot into Mac OS and install NTFS-3g to enable read/write capability for NTFS under Mac OS from: http://www.ntfs-3g.org/I was then able to copy the entire directory to c:\ without problems. The only hitch is that everytime the windows installer needs a file it still prompts for GOBAL..*** You just have to cut and past the C:\"directory name"\I386 at each prompt, where "directory name" is the folder you copied the files from the install cd to. What i ended up doing is take the HD to a different computer out of my house (my school) put the HD in one computer at my school and just installed windows and it went just fine. My CD drive began misbehaving (constantly ejecting with or without a CD in it), and I unplugged / rebooted a few times to try resuming the setup. CD Drive issues prevented me from loading any CD... I uninstalled the drive using Terry's method, rebooted, and Windows rediscovered the drive. Themn, I was able to load my Reinstallation CD and everything worked fine from then on. Make sure your BIOS boot order is Floppy-->CD-ROM-->HDD. Dont press anything when it says "Press any key..." Let Windows Setup restart, thats it.... Done and Done...simple huh!? It spun up and the error message went away and the installation worked normally. All I had to do was change the boot order in bios to boot from hard drive first rather than the cdrom.So my install steps were: 1) Set bios to boot from cd first to initiate winxp install (then format, partition, blah blah..) 2)System reboots 3)Get the GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM0\I386\ams error at the install GUI - click cancel (system restarts) 4) set bios to boot FROM HDD first 5) system then boots back into gui and restarts winxp installation and actually works this time! I have tried everything said in this forum and finally after 4days trial and error the one thing that helped me getting past the "i/o device error" was to burn my XP-installation cd with PowerISO 4.3 at lowest speed (just to make sure everything burned in correctly) instead of f***ing NERO! After I had burned the disk I started all over instead of just hitting R for Recovery. Here's how I got it to work: had to copy the asms folder to a CF Card which I plugged into a card reader, which I plugged into a usb port. Then when it went into spasms asking for asms, I typed in e:/i386 and it was ok. Restarted and it asked for another file which I also copied onto the CF card. After it spassed out again I finally removed the cd drive and switched the jumper to slave. Then it couldn't find soundman.exe, at which point my mouse stopped working so I hit escape, and escape again, and escape yet once more... The primary cure turned out to be: Power down, turn off the power supply toggle switch, unplug it from the wall for a few seconds, let it all sit quietly in time-out ;-) for at least two hours, and only then, turn the toggle switch back on and restart the computer, before starting a Windows installation and before resuming a Windows installation that stopped with the request “The file ‘asms’ on Windows XP Home Edition Service Patch 2 disc is needed … please insert the Windows XP disc ... “. Things I tried that mostly didn’t work: -  Microsoft 307654 Recovery Console fix -  Microsoft 311755 Regedit fix of Loading Hive %Windir%\System32\Config\system.sav, …. -  Different BIOS settings -  Reset the BIOS -  Flash the BIOS -  Different SATA hard drives -  Load Windows on an IDE hard drive with Windows with the intent of copying the asms folder onto the SATA boot drives -  Burn the asms folder onto a blank disc and put it into the CD drive when Windows asks for the ‘asms’ file -  New CD drive -  New motherboard -  Measured/verified the power supply at P/S manufacturer -  Cleaned the XP disk with soap and warm water -  Polished the XP disk (in radial direction) with Brasso (this actually worked for eliminating the problem of Installation saying it can’t read a certain file, except, of course, the ‘asms’ file/folder) -  Two other XP disks -  Starting from scratch many times: boot with Win XP Retail/OEM (SP2) disk, F10 (for my particular RAID chipset) to delete and recreate RAID array, F6 to install RAID drivers and HDD controller, create partition, non-quick format the partition, install Win XP until it hangs, gives me the BSoD or gives me an error message, usually “The file ‘asms’ on Windows XP Home Edition Service Patch 2 disc is needed … “, or "NTDLR is missing...") Instead of having the internal hard drive of my laptop boot first, I had it so that the CD rom would boot first. I remember switching the boot sequence a few times, actually, but on the third try, it worked. From: Justin on 08/24/2008 Had to do a repair re-installation of an XP system (DELL) when the usual global root/../asms error came out. Keyboard was also not working during the set up.I worked around this (after trying many other things) by removing the HDD and putting it into a 3.5 inch external hard disk enclosure. I then hooked it up to a working PC (ie. via a USB port) and copied all the i386 folder from the XP installation CD to this HDD. From: drGeek on 05/07/2008 Hi,Here is one solution to the problem. On another computer copy the /I386/asms directory to a blank cd using windows built in copy. The problem seems to be found in the cd reader in the computer you are trying to install it in. When you allow setup to load, click "X" to close the error box and setup will ask you for your xp disk. Swap the cd with the asms directory in and let setup copy the files, then swap it for the xp disk when it asks again. This solved my problem pretty easily after a lot of hair pulling!! I've been trying (on my third attempt) to get a nLite cut down version installed on my 3epc.What I did was to copy the i386 directory that nLite had generated (or the i386 in your slipstreamed folder) onto an sd card, this is recognised as d: and so every time it asked for a file from GLOBALROOT . . . I entered d:\i386. It asked for about 20 files and just as I was wondering how many more, it finished. It's onto the installing devices at the moment. From: TL on 04/09/2008 I had this problem "fatal error parameter is incorrect e:\i386\asms" when installing XP Pro SP2 on a Dell Dimension 4700. Was using a burned copy of a retail version. When it came up and ask for the files, I took the disk out and inserted a Student Edition disk, and it was able to read ok from it. Once it was done with the disk for awhile (watch for when your cd drive stops; usually at the Installing Devices part) then I put the burned disk back in and used it for the remainder of the install. So, to recap, if you have other XP disks available, try using them just long enought to get over the hump, but make sure you put the first disk you started the installation with in, since different XP keys (ie OEM, Retail, Upgrade, Academic) are not compatible. From: David on 02/13/2008 i had the same problem to after removing all usb devices and using anything but nero to burn the iso. installation ran fine.appears that there is an increasing list of problems appearing with nero. used to use it for re-encoding avi files to dvd, ended up with frame skips, unsynced audio and unreadable discs. started using avi2dvd no problems what so every.i highly recommend finding another program to deal with all the aspects which you currently use nero for because i am sure that the list of problems with this application is set to only increase. From: patriot on 12/31/2007 I forgot that I've had problems with usb mouse & windows xp, both home & professional, so when I set up xp pro install with usb mouse plugged in to my ThinkPad, it caused the message "the file 'asms' on windows xp professional" etc is needed. After reading these posts, I unplugged the usb mouse, plugged in a standard mouse to the mouse port, rebooted the install disk, and now the installation seems to be progressing beyond the point of the previous error. After you have tried different burns, different OEM CD's, different CDROM readers, cables, etc., the issue is clearly a Microsoft diver/bus timing issue. The computer I was working with wouldn't boot into Windows any more, too far into setup. From: Dylan on 11/27/2007 Lost my clients Intel based mobo due to power supply allowing 110volts in upon failing...replaced with AMD mobo/cpu...same cdrom access thing though i have loads of dvd/cdrom/readers/etc at my disposal and none were seen by system including SATA plextor unit...windows setup asking for the ASMS on I386folder on global/blah/blah/blah...could not get the drivers loaded shift+F10 for the cdrom and so the repair of the BSOD went nowhere slowly. Finally ended up copying the I386 folder from their original XP-home CD to a USB thumbdrive and after the shift+F10 sysdm.cpl shoehorn of the USB drivers (auto'd it) I could...after much changing of the path to D:\I386, continue the Setup Repair load to fruition. From: patrick on 10/26/2007 I had the problem when reload xp sp2 on my compaq with new hard drive and this worked for me. when you get the fatal error [installtion failed D:\1386\asms parameter is incorrect]. 1. take out the xp sp2 cd out. 2. click [ok] this goes to log screen [ok] this, the computer restarts. 3. wait until asked to put in xp sp2 cd click [ok]this[but DO NOT put xp sp2 cd in]. 4. you now have a path box with D:\1386 in it change this to E:\1386 put you xp sp2 into your E drive [your other cd drive] wait, it will remove the file AUTO if not [ok] it. 5.it will ask you to put your xp sp2 cd back into your D drive do this and [ok] it, now you should see the install continue. good luck Votes: Rating: 0 Delete: 0

From: Ruben on 08/28/2007 Alright folks - Here are my two cents and it worked for me. Just use the same IDE/SCSI channel that your hard drive is using. Set teh hard drive as the master and then set your CDROM drive as the slave on the same channel. It worked for me on the very first try.What happens many times is that there are either IDE/SCSI controllers that for some reason the XP setup will not load the neccessary drivers for. However, it will load for the first channel so that one is always enabled (At least almost always for IDE, SCSI is a different monster sometimes)Once you have the OS loaded and it recovers from the ASMS error after making the changes I suggested, then simply connect everything back the way it was when it last worked.At this point just go to your motherboard manufacturers website and make sure you have the lastest drivers for all of your hard ware, onboard and third party. The trick that got me through it was, keep the cd out of the drive until it prompts for you to put in the cd to continue the installation.. if you boot up with the cd in the drive it wont work.. so wait until you are prompted to put the cd in. From: Dan on 12/06/2006 I was able to borrow an external USB CD-Rom drive but I can't get the machine to recognize it during the Recovery process. When I have my Original XP Pro (w/holigraph) loaded into my original CD-R Drive, the setup/recovery process initiates. When I get the DOS prompt in the Recovery Console, the USB CD-Rom drive is recognized as I can do a DIR on that drive with a CD loaded. But when I exit the console and the machine boots, only the original CD-R drive is recognized. I've tried to detach the original CD-R and I can see during the boot that it is no longer there. From: bgw on 11/02/2006 The common advice in this thread worked for me. I was performing a repair of XP Pro. After the reboot during system setup the on-board DVD ROM in my laptop apparently was not detected. The CD never started spinning after Windows setup started. I got the error "the file 'asms' on windows xp professional service pack 2 cd is needed". The default location was globalroot\cdrom0\I386. I was unable to browse to a new location as the keyboard and mouse were unresponsive. After starting over, trying the repair several times and trying in a different computer of the same model with the same results I ran across this thread while searching the internet. From: Rob on 05/19/2006 Same problem, including mouse and keyboard drivers not loaded. I used and old CD-ROM and disconnected second hard drive and problem went away except for the keyboard and mouse. When Windows XP Pro was installing devices, a USB card driver was not certified but mouse and keyboard still not working! I pulled all PCI boards and turned off all peripherals in BIOS, Windows loaded the mouse and keyboard drivers and finally finished setup without any other problems. This PC is at least 5-6 yrs old - has original Hitachi CD/DVD Drive (reader, not writer). Have unplugged ALL devices from back of computer. Just has (1)internal CD/DVD drive and (1) internal LS120 floppy drive left installed. Something happened to computer - Windows XP Pro would no longer run. Tried re-installing Windows XP Pro. using OEM CD with hologram. Attempted to do a repair install, instead of a fresh install - hoping to be able to keep all programs/devices intact. During installation, computer got stuck on: "The file 'asms' on Windows XP Pro Serv PK1 CD is needed" Type the path where the file is located and click OK" Copy files from: Global Root\Device\CDRom0\I386." The screen is locked, and I can not type or change anything. Can NOT change the path. Can not hit SHIFT F10 to get to a DOS prompt, etc. Have tried running in Installation Recovery Mode, and can get a C:\Windows prompt. However, can't copy any files from my CD (D:\) drive. Can't seem to be able to run REGEDIT. Wanted to try the MICROSOFT SUPPORT suggestion (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=311755), but don't know how to get to REDEDIT. I can get to SETUP mode and back to Windows installation mode, but that's it.Suggestions on what to try next? Should I try a "Fresh" Windows install? Will I lose any programs or devices? After trying all sorts of things which included re-installs and cable changes I did a little search and turned up this site.Guess what? Based on a suggestion by a fellow poster I unplugged my Card Reader, integrated on Floppy Drive, and this sorted it out. Obviously, the card reader is being detected as a USB drive(s) and causing problems. The odd thing is that I was using the cd/rw drive that came with the old i810e 667mhz celeron. The old cd-rom drive I used was a 4X that came out of a pentium 100mhz. I doubt many people have one of these lying around. Maybe the cd/rw drive is just bad, but reads and writes in windowsXP without problems. Who Knows? Problem doesn't make any sense. But it works now, and thtat's all anyone cares about. So if you have the same problem go digging through the closet and tell your girlfriend that, "See! What happens is XP moves on in the install & hits the CABs for devices & suddenly recognizes extra peripherals installed(usually USB).Now it starts changing the Device list & suddenly what was once F: is further on up the ladder. Do a [shift]F10.This brings up the DOS shell in installation &, you should already have DOS at this point,do a dir listing for the device the error has labeled ie... dir F: for an error "can't find F:\ASMS for install...".You will get the dir,but it will be for an add on peripheral.Start wiritng them down.Move up the device eating food chain letter by letter until you find your XPinstallation volume disk. These interlopers are your problem.Power down.Unplug power source if there is an insternal device.Unclip all your problem devices that were listed.In my case they were the newer lightscibe DVDs that can RW covering all the bases.Durring Dynamic install they are finally ID'd & thats when the device ID changes. Now plug in & boot(I assume you'd changed boot device order to prefer the CD unit(OS wise this should have locked the device ID,but XP wasn't made that way)?Now when you boot & the black screen says "boot from CD?" do nothing.When XP recieves a no key durring its time out it assumes your resuming a previous install attempt.Now it will resume & your at ~3/4 of the way through install.Relax...This is a tough one I couldn't even get from the MS faq.Now you can start adding the previously unk peripherals(as per normal means)left out of the install.You should have no problems.TTFN... I have tried changing CD Roms, I have tried putting C:\1386 into the window that ask where the file can be found. Changing cd roms did not help. When I try to tell it where to find the file on C (It is already there from XPhome) it does nothing at all. Will not let me click enter. I threw in an old (compared to my new plextor 716A DL DVDR; which is the allegid cause of these headaches) 52x CdRom; loaded in the XP disk and the ASMS incorrect parameter error magically disappeared. I've spent the last 3 evenings dealing with a failed XP install getting the message that the parameters are incorrect and fatal error and that 1386 asms error message. Searching for help I ended up at nocrash.com and was scrolling through all the solutions. The easiest solution to try was Ted's....who said he switched CD drives. I removed the XP disk from the D drive, stuck it in the E drive, clicked okay and waited.... AND AT WORKED WITHOUT A HITCH!!! AWESOME!!! And so easy!! Everyone should try that first!! Thanks Ted! (i used winme ebd) start pc up with cd rom support. go to cd drive with xp cd in it and change to I386 dir. then run winnt.exe and you're off and installing. don't forget to run smartdrv before install or you'll be watching tv for awhile. I had this problem b4.. and when upgrading from win98(even from a back up copy) copy the cd to a directory on your c: drive and run setup from there (without the cd in the drive) and every thing should be ok.b4 you do this check the asms dir and make sure it is over 1 meg cause if its not your copy is for the dogs.over out... thx for the help Votes: Rating: 0 Delete: 0

The Parameter is incorrect." 6th attempt at installing on a machine that had XP Pro on it before I started to try a clean install to sort out a slow running machine. I have tried everything. 1CD 1Hard drive, another hard drive, the hard drive/s in another machine, 1 stick of RAM on its own, all video caching in bios disabled, all PnP disabled, internal & External caching disabled aswell as CPU L2 Cache ECC checking..(which, incidently means it takes two hours to get to the point where it tells you it won't B*&@^Y work again.. I have also tried a combination of the above in various diffent arrangements. This is a machine I promised someone back in their hands and sorted for the next day.... hmmm I have come to the conclusion it must be Bios / motherboard / unknown gremlin as it once had xp on the machine.. If anyone has a solution/ workaround i would be eternally grateful as the only solution to me at the moment is a new motherboard/entire setup!! Votes: Rating: 0 Delete: 0

From: Steve on 12/08/2002 I had this problem recently and it was caused by installing the wrong version of Easycd creator. Windows wouldn't boot...so I tried to have it repair itself and while it was reading off the cdrom it gave me that error.
